Reviews:
• Featuring a riveting lead turn from newcomer Toki Pilioko, this assured, stylistically adept feature debut from writer-director Sacha Wolff should garner sufficient international attention after premiering in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
• This may be Wolff’s fiction debut, but the director (who studied at La Fémis, France’s leading film school) does as fellow grad (and “Mustang” helmer) Deniz Gamze Ergüven did the year before, applying a slick Euro style to his relatively little-seen locale, filling what could pass for a Hollywood canvas with genuine ethnocentric color.
• Following the long and winding path of a young rugby player from Wallis and Futuna thrust into mainland France, Sacha Wolff has made a stunning and enlightening feature debut.
• “…Sacha Wolff’s powerful feature-film debut…”
• A simple, emotional and brutal journey, like a ship ravaged by a storm, very skilfully told by the director against a backdrop portraying the path to adulthood, cultural divides, neo-colonialism in sport, and the corrosive powers of money on spiritual values.
