Synopsis

Nina is 12. Her parents are getting a divorce and her world is falling apart before her eyes.

Her mom and dad say they are only doing what is best for her, but in fact, they act as though they only cared for themselves. Nina doesn’t understand them.

She feels abandoned and deceived – it’s like there is nothing left in the world that she could believe in. Her only security in life is competitive swimming.

At the pool she finds calm and support and everything she lacks at home. When it looks like she won’t be able to attend a swimming competition, she makes a radical move.

Synopsis

Nina is twelve years old and her world has just been shattered to smithereens: Her parents’ marriage has broken down and they are getting a divorce. After his internationally successful feature debut Miracle Juraj Lehotský now brings us an intimate drama in which the viewer looks upon the world and the selfish, visionless behaviour of adults through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl. A girl who is resilient and belligerent, but also vulnerable and just as fragile as the miniature world she creates for herself in the garden shed.

About the Director

An up-and-coming filmmaker, Lehotsky previously directed the documentary feature “Blind Loves,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, where it won the C.I.C.A.E Art Cinema Award. Lehotsky’s feature debut, “Miracle,” premiered at Karlovy Vary and earned Special Jury Mention.

Reviews:

  •  “Heartbreaking” ;  “Breakthrough performance” (Indiewire)
  • “visually striking”; “well-observed” ; “a terrific performance out of the young and inexperienced female lead…” (The Hollywood Reporter)
  • “This is a fine take on what happens when a divorcing couple can’t see the impact of their acrimony on their child.” (Now Toronto)
  • “Young Bibiana Nováková anchors the picture superbly in the title role, precisely capturing her character’s painful restraint.” (Cinema Scope)
  • The film’s star, Bibiana Nováková, has been acclaimed for her performance as Nina, which marks her first role.
  • Like his feature debut Miracle, Juraj Lehotský’s second film also draws on his experience as a documentarist to depict life and personal relationships without a trace of embellishment. While Miracle highlighted various social aspects, on this occasion Lehotský, together with his close colleague, respected scriptwriter Marek Leščák, turns out an intimate drama in which the viewer looks upon the world and the selfish, visionless behaviour of adults through the eyes of a 12-year-old girl.
