Nicoline, an experienced psychologist, starts a new job at a penal institution. She meets Idris, a sex offender who committed a series of grave crimes. After five years of treatment, he is about to go on his first unaccompanied probation. His team of practitioners are enthusiastic about his development but newcomer Nicoline does not trust him and tries to push his probation. Reviews:

  • Halina Reijn’s unlikely love story is one of the controversial entries for this year’s international feature film Oscar.
  • Instead, in Halina Reijn’s debut Instinct (which is the Netherlands’ international feature film Oscar candidate), the premise sets up what has been acclaimed in some quarters as a subtle and nuanced drama, exploring power, sexuality and gender.
  • As a prison shrink seduced by a dangerous inmate — or is it the other way round? — Carice van Houten is on electrifying form in Halina Reijn's risky, impressive debut.
  • Director Halina Reijn On ‘Instinct’: “It’s A Story About Sexuality And Power” – Toronto Studio
  • Carice van Houten ('Game of Thrones') and Marwan Kenzari (Jafar from the live-action 'Aladdin') headline actress-turned-director Halina Reijn's Dutch-language feature debut.
  • Definitely not basic

Trivia:

  • This is the first feature as writer-director for Dutch theater and film actress Halina Reijn (Valkyrie).
  • The idea for Instinct was sparked after seeing a TV report about true cases of highly educated female psychiatrists having sexual relationships with dangerous inmates.
  • Van Gestel kept the budget low in spite of the presence of two major stars in van Houten (Game Of Thrones) and Kenzari (who starred in Disney’s Aladdin).

Trivias (IMDB):

  • Marwan Kenzari's character Idris is incarcerated for sexual assault of a very violent nature. His character in Loft (2010) also displayed the same proclivities, and was a victim of domestic abuse as well.
  • Instinct was the 2019 Dutch submission for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
  • First production for Man Up, the production company of Carice van Houten and Halina Reijn.

  • Actress Carice van Houten and director Halina Reijn have been friends for many years, and previously worked together on many projects, most prominently Black Book (2006).

Black Book – Best Foreign Film Nominee, BAFTA 2007; Best International Film, Venice FF 2006.

  • Carice Van Houten said working on Game of Thrones (2011) turned her off of filming nude scenes and refuses to do them anymore, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement. She told Insider that she's brought the lesson she learned to her other projects, including Instinct. She said she and director Halina Reijn made it into a dogma where they are done with nudity. "We don't need to show nudity to create intimacy, we don't need to see breasts."
