Synopsis

Christmas Eve. Eastern Poland. Adam, a young economic migrant, finds out that his girlfriend is pregnant and decides to change his life. He wants to leave Poland for good, take his girlfriend with him and set up his firm abroad. In order to do that he travels to his hometown in eastern Poland to persuade his relatives to sell the land which is their only property. During the traditional Christmas Eve supper, Adam learns that the price for his dream to come true is much higher than he anticipated.

Cineuropa

Adam unexpectedly visits his family house at Christmas after a few years of working abroad. No family member knows about his secret plans and the real reasons of his visit.

Multi-award winner at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and also scooping 11 nominations for the Polish Film Awards, Silent Night is a family drama combined with black humour by first-time director Piotr Domalewski.

A rainy Christmas Eve somewhere in eastern Poland. A family is preparing for the annual celebration. As usual, there will be a lot of food, vodka and some fights... When Adam, the oldest son, working in the Netherlands, finds out that his girlfriend is pregnant, he decides to change his life. He travels to his hometown in order to realise his plan. But Christmas dinner won't turn out the way he planned.

Silent Night takes an honest, understanding look at a Polish rural family and community and is a very mature debut that studies the consequences of economic migration and the scars it leaves on family bonds.

Adam, who lives and works abroad, visits his family home in the Polish provinces on Christmas Eve. At first, he keeps the real reason for his visit to himself, but it isn’t long before he starts letting one relative after another in on his plans. His father, his brother, who he’s fallen out with, his sister and her husband all have a significant role to play in his scheme.

Things get even more complicated when he announces that he’s going to be a father. At that point, in line with time-honoured Polish tradition, alcohol appears on the table. Nobody in the family has the slightest suspicion that the ensuing events of that Christmas Eve are going to have a massive impact on all their lives.
